As one of its objectives in the Strategic Plan for 2006, The Hinton Council for Arts and Culture called for a signature event for Hinton that would include the participation of the entire community, create an exciting environment for educating our people of their local history and culture, and provide a platform to allow our local talent to gain exposure and recognition. The goal was to increase sense of pride, ownership of community and identity of the local people through increasing their awareness of local strengths with respect to our great assets i.e. our people, our geographic region and our local history.

The first ever Föhn Festival (Föhn is what our early settlers would have called the Chinook winds was an incredible success with an attendance of over 2700 people. Hinton became the Provincial Communities in Bloom champion in its population category by winning 5 blooms and a special mention for its community involvement through projects like Föhn Festival.

Föhn Festival Society of Hinton is a non-profit organization made up entirely of volunteers. The planning committee is lead by a new chairperson each year. The Town of Hinton is the major contributor and sets the stage for “thinking big”.

The 2008 Föhn Festival drew an estimated crowd of 6800 people and was a tremendous success with both the local residents and visitors to Hinton. Building on last year’s achievements, the volunteer organizers have expanded the festival to a full two day event to be held June 30 and July 1st. The Föhn Festival is Hinton’s opportunity to celebrate the regions historical significance, connect with neighbors, understand the cultures that make up our community, increase a sense of community pride and showcase our rich diversity to new residents and visitors.

The Föhn Festival is held at the Green Square off Highway 16, located near the Travel Alberta Visitor Information Centre office and the Hinton & District Chamber of Commerce building.
